Needing Napoleon by Gareth Williams is an example of a novel we’ve produced as part of our Tailored Typesetting service.

An overview of the Tailored Typesetting process:

  1. We’ll have a provisional discussion with you about your book when you first get in touch.
  2. We’ll then provide a quote which meets your bespoke requirements and ask you to review our terms and conditions and privacy notice.
  3. When you’re happy with the quote and have agreed to our terms and conditions and privacy notice, we’ll supply an advanced invoice of 50% of the total fee to schedule your book into our calendar.
  4. Once we have received payment for the advanced invoice, we will create a sample of the layout and design for the book’s interior pages based on the discussion we’ve had with you about the aesthetics of the book.
  5. We can update this sample following feedback from you until you are happy to sign it off.
  6. Once you are happy with the sample, we will use this as a foundation to typeset, format and layout your text with care and precision. Any images, graphics or illustrations required in the book will be added at this stage.
  7. Once our attentive work is complete, you will receive an electronic PDF of your book to proofread. You can make one round of amendments to this proof free of charge.
  8. Once your review is complete and we’ve implemented any changes you’ve requested, we'll send a final invoice for the remaining fee for the project.
  9. Once we have received payment for the final invoice, you will receive a perfectly produced, print-ready PDF.

If you have ordered any add on services, we will provide these when supplying the print-ready PDF or soon afterward.

The exact time frame of the project will depend on many factors including:

  • Your general availability to answer any questions we may have during the process
  • The word count (length) of your book - the higher the word count, the longer the process will take
  • The number of images, graphics and illustrations your book contains - the higher the image count, the longer the process will take
  • The complexity of the text and design
  • Your availability to proofread the electronic PDF(s)
  • The additional services you request
  • Whether we are working on other scheduled work simultaneously

The entire process can be completed within a week, though it is more commonly completed with two weeks. Complex projects may require four weeks to complete.

Case Study: Heardred’s Hill

Heardred’s Hill is one of the most ambitious projects we’ve undertaken. Roz Holmes approached us to re-publish a book her mother, Joan Allens, originally wrote in 1977, with two subsequent editions in 1981 and 1994. The issue? The text existed only in hard copy, as the original publisher had ceased trading.

Roz provided the original manuscript and previous editions, which we digitised by scanning and using OCR software to convert the text into an editable format. We then typeset the book, opting for a more modern font and layout to enhance readability. We also updated the illustrations, replacing some as per Roz’s request, and revised the index to match the new pagination.

Additionally, we designed a new cover that maintained the essence of the earlier editions while modernising the typefaces. We helped Roz register her family as a publisher, create a new logo, and obtain an ISBN.

After six weeks of close collaboration, the project was completed, and we coordinated with ImprintDigital for printing. We hope this new edition of Heardred’s Hill reaches even more readers.

“[The Book Typesetters] not only produce beautiful-looking books but, I have discovered first-hand, provide highly attentive support for authors as their books make their way into the world. A pleasure to work with.” – Robert Selby, The Coming-Down Time
